If you want somewhere that is secure for your dog to play and exercise in while you are at work during the day then it is a good idea to invest in a dog run. A run will prevent your pet from digging up the garden or escaping out onto a nearby road where he could be hurt or worse. Dog houses are a useful addition to the run if your dog is going to be outside during the winter months or at night.
Galvanised dog run panels are more expensive than untreated panels but you will make a saving in the long run as they will last a lifetime instead of succumbing to rust and corrosion after a few years. Once you have measured and marked out the size of the run that you would like to build you will be able to calculate exactly how many panels you will need. Don’t forget to include a gate in the equation as these are often sold separately. By using a garden fence or house wall as one side of the run you will save yourself some money as well as being able to build more quickly.
If your dog is likely to try and dig his way out then laying a concrete base is probably a good idea. This base will also be useful when attaching the supporting posts. If your dog is to spend a lot of time in the run then you may want to lay something, such as soil, over the concrete so that he doesn’t end up with sore paws.
As the runs are pre-fabricated they tend to be easy enough for a single individual to build alone. Extras that are needed are a latch to ensure that the gate can be locked shut and a roof to prevent dogs who like to escape from jumping over the walls.
