There are not a whole lot of people who are able to resist a great looking book case for their home. And not all book cases are made alike. You can find a color or design to match any personality. Some people would rather have a large, wide book case with an off the wall design, while others prefer tall, narrow, solid wood and a classic look. One area that it can be narrowed down with is size. Book cases tend to have some basic common dimensions, about 8 feet long, 4 feet wide and 1 foot deep. If you alter these measurements too much, you might have trouble fitting the book case in the space you need it to fill. If you make it more narrow, you also limit the number of books that in can house properly. And the wider you go, the less support the shelves are getting, which can cause shelves to become overloaded and will be less sturdy. Your book case could eventually collapse under all the weight of your books, and then you will just have to get another one! The shelf should be no wider than about 6 feet.
You must also consider what type of material you would like your book case made out of. Ash, cherry and oak are very popular wood materials that book cases are made out of. A pine bookcase is also very popular choice. These woods are attractive and also very durable.
