Every backyard can benefit from outdoor string lighting, regardless of size. An apartment balcony gets a festive upgrade with a railing lined with lights. A small deck can be lit for a party or you can highlight the steps for safety. A large tree-filled yard can become a fairy wonderland with strings of lights draped among and between tree branches. But beyond hanging lights simply to illuminate an area is an entire realm of creative ideas.
Patio string lights can be coiled and placed inside a clear jar or bottle for a sparkling centerpiece, either inside or out. LED rope lights can be curled around glasses and a pitcher on a serving tray to light up the drinks. Fix a string of lights to the bottom of a glass table to provide romantic lights for a dinner party. Use strings of lights to create a path from your driveway to the party area in the backyard. Use lights to highlight possible hazards such as low branches, tree stumps, or clotheslines before a large patio party; the lights can do double duty as decorations and safety devices.
For kids, or the young-at-heart, LED rope lights can also be used to create a nighttime football field, soccer pitch, or obstacle course. Affix rope lights to a basketball hoop to encourage evening games. Maybe you turn off every other light and hang a pinata with a string of rope lights for extra fun. Use rope lights to design whimsical creatures supported by wire or create designs on tree trunks. Run rope lights in a circuitous path and ask young kids to follow the path to find buried treasure.
Strings of patio lights are affordable, reusable and easy to install. Rope lights are easier to store but traditional string lights have more a twinkling, elegant look. You can find lights at discount and department stores as well as home improvement and even some home interior locations. Whichever type of lights you choose, think outside the box and get creative in your lighting designs. Don’t settle for simply hanging lights on a gutter or railing, purchase different lengths and colors and use your imagination.
