There are different ways of naming a triangle. First, you can name them based on the measurements of their sides. Second, you can name them using the measurements of their angles, or you can name them b combining the first two ways of identifying triangles.
There are three types of triangles based on their side’s measurements. When you have three equal sides on a triangle, it is called an Equilateral triangle. Triangles with two equal sides on the other hand are called isosceles triangles. Meanwhile, triangles with no equal sides are called Scalene.
Basing on the measurements of the angles is another way of naming triangles. Triangles with angles over 90 degrees are called Obtuse triangles. Those with 90 degrees angle on the other hand are called Right triangles and those with less than 90 degree angles are called Acute triangles.
You can also name triangles based on the measurement of both their sides and angles. When you have a triangle with a right angle, and two sides being equal, then you can call it a Right Isosceles Triangle. Triangles that are Equilateral on the other hand are always Acute triangles. Having three equal sides would mean that all three angles are equal also and the only way to achieve this in a triangle is if all three angles measure 60 degrees. Since this is less than 90 degrees, then it is safe to say that all Equilateral triangles are Acute triangles. Obtuse triangles on the other hand are most often Scalene triangles which don’t have equal sides.
These are just some of the easy geometry lessons that you can learn in Elementary Mathematics. And although they are very basic concepts, it is very important that you learn each of these terms and remember them since even in higher Math they are repeatedly used in different lessons, quizzes and exercises.
